Supplier onboarding: the compliance checklist modern buyers use

Onboarding a new supplier is more than a price agreement and a purchase order. Before a large, CSRD- or NIS2-obliged organisation does business with you, its procurement team runs a compliance check. Here is what that check now includes.

1. Sustainability profile (VS-Standard)

Can the supplier provide its scope 1 and 2 emissions, energy use and waste in line with the VS-Standard? Without that data, the buyer cannot substantiate its own scope 3 category 1.

2. Valid certificates and insurance

ISO 9001, ISO 14001, VCA, liability insurance — and, crucially: are they still valid on the contract start date? An expired certificate is grounds for rejection in tenders.

3. NIS2 cybersecurity maturity

Under NIS2, the buyer must assess the cybersecurity of its supply chain. A maturity score (0-100) makes suppliers comparable without ten separate questionnaires.

4. Human rights and financial stability

A signed CSDDD declaration (no forced labour, no child labour) plus an indication of financial health — because a supplier that goes bankrupt is a bigger risk than one with slightly higher emissions.
